On Wednesday May 10, 2017, we officially welcomed our newest ship AmaKristina. I cherish every new ship we christen but this one will always have a special meaning to me as it not only bears by name but also marks AmaWaterways’ 15th Year Anniversary.
The christening day dawned to brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies – just as Captain Jan had promised. As we approached Lahnstein, all our onboard guests and crew came to the top deck to join me as we were welcomed by water cannons, trumpets and jubilant waves from many local guests who had gathered dockside. Already, I could feel the excitement mounting as the afternoon festivities started to officially roll out.
We disembarked and were greeted by a magical, medieval market scene complete with music, dancers and even fire-eaters. A lovely tent and podium had been set up and the backdrop was a striking view of the medieval Stolzenfels Castle. The official speeches were done in both English and German and I thank Wade, our Director of European Operations from our Basel office, for his amazing translations that caught the spontaneity, warmth and humor of our local hosts represented by Mayor Peter Labonte. The children delighted us with local folklore songs and the ship received the traditional religious blessing.
As I stood on the podium looking out at the faces of so many friends and family that had joined us for this special occasion, I was deeply touched to see the pride in my parents’ faces and smiles of genuine friendship from our previous godmothers and so many of our crew and business partners that have contributed so much to our success over the past 15 years.
All that was left to do was for me to bless the ship and successfully break the champagne bottle – I’m happy and relieved to say the bottle broke into a million pieces spraying champagne and most importantly good luck on AmaKristina, her crew and all our guests that will sail upon her!
