The Mosel and Me

It winds through the steepest vineyards, oldest cities and most charming villages of my native Germany. This is the land of prestigious Rieslings known throughout the world; and of humble traditions known only here.
In the fall, the Mosel Valley takes on its own special glow.

Terraced vineyards are ablaze in yellow, gold and orange. In the quaint towns nestled between them, harvest season is a time to rejoice. Some vineyards, you see, are sloped as much as 65° degrees. Harvesting grapes takes skill, luck and finely-honed customs passed down for generations.

Street fairs and wine festivals abound in Mosel towns in the fall. You’ll likely hear lively folk bands and see plenty of locals enjoying themselves in rustic wine bars.

Stroll through picture-perfect town squares, medieval streets and half-timbered houses in towns such as Koblenz, Cochem and Bernkastel. Gaze down upon the Mosel, winding ribbon-like below from the hilltop Reichsburg Castle.

Visit Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Wonder at city gates, baths and basilicas left as vestiges from Roman times.

The Romans, in fact, were the first to plant vines along the Mosel. That was in the 2nd century. By the fourth century, the Roman poet Ausonius was writing about the Mosel’s beauty at harvest time.

That’s better recommendation than any guide book review!

So, why not take the poet’s advice?
