Debuting in 2024, our new 7-night cruise between the Port of Dijon and Lyon has many charms. If you have already visited France or you are trying to decide which French itinerary is right for your next river cruise, the six reasons outlined below may just push Flavors of Burgundy to the top of your list.
1. Focuses Exclusively on the Saône River – Only Available on this Itinerary
If you have already cruised the Seine River through Paris and Normandy or the Rhône River through and around Provence, rest assured there are breathtaking new views that will surprise and delight you from your vantage point on the Saône. From castles to forests to farmland to mustard fields, cruising through Burgundy offers unique landscapes. Plus, several days on this itinerary offer scenic cruising on board as an alternative to afternoon tours, so if you are seeking relaxation or exceptional photo opportunities, this is the itinerary for you. Burgundy is also known for its half-timbered architecture and rooftops featuring colorful mosaics. In addition, there are distinctive flavors (high quality Charolais beef, Escargot de Bourgogone and potent cheeses) that originated – and should definitely be sampled – in this French region.
2. Dedicated Excursions in Dijon – Exclusive to this 7-Night Itinerary
While our Essence of Burgundy & Provence itinerary simply embarks or disembarks in the Port of Dijon, our Flavors of Burgundy itinerary gives you the luxury of time to explore the “Birthplace of Mustard” on our included excursions. Take a walking tour through this UNESCO World Heritage city, seeing the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, who ruled the region as well as Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg during medieval times. Alternatively, you may pedal along the lovely banks of the Saône on a guided bike tour or marvel at the stunning 13th-century Château d’Arcelot alongside your local guide. If you prefer wandering through town on your own, perhaps sample some of the local delicacies in this city renowned for its food – and wine.
3. Cruises Through Burgundy: A Highly Acclaimed Red Wine Region
Do you or your traveling companions consider yourselves wine connoisseurs? This itinerary offers four included tastings so you can sip and savor wines from the Chalonnaise, Maconnais and Beaujolais regions, as well as from Clos de Vougeot, a unique wall-enclosed vineyard with more than 900 years of winemaking tradition. Not interested in wine? With up to five included daily excursions including a handful of active bike tours and abbey visits, you will still be able to have an incredible personalized experience.
4. Offers the Most Overnights of Any of Our 7-Night France Itineraries
While AmaWaterways includes guided excursions in every port, some guests prefer to explore on their own – and this is encouraged as well! With the ship docked overnight almost every evening, you have even more time to venture into tranquil towns such as Macon and Tournus as well as Lyon, the “Culinary Capital of France,” enabling you to pop into local restaurants and bars. During July and August departures, with the sun setting as late as 9:00 or 9:30 pm, you can take a romantic stroll to watch the golden sun melt into the horizon or even borrow one of our complimentary bicycles for a tranquil ride along the riverbanks late into the evening.
5. Cruises Aboard AmaCello, Your Personal Château on the River
With no more than 144 guests welcomed on board and most staterooms boasting destination-fitting French balconies from which to take in the ever-present views, AmaCello is also wonderful for acquainting yourself with fellow travelers. Head to the Main Lounge for afternoon tea, participate in host-led wellness classes or sip a glass of local wine on the spacious Sun Deck, perhaps dipping your toes into the soothing open-air whirlpool. You may also make reservations to dine at our signature Chef’s Table specialty restaurant one evening, courtesy of AmaWaterways – and if you are traveling solo, we will be sure to introduce you to some welcoming tablemates. We are even waiving our typical “single supplement” for solo travelers on select Flavors of Burgundy sailings reserved by June 30, 2024 – click here for details.
6. Optional Land Packages in Paris and Geneva – Accompanied by a Cruise Manager
Would you like to maximize your international airfare and explore a new destination not included on your cruise? Our Flavors of Burgundy itinerary offers optional land packages in both Paris and Geneva, enabling you to bookend your river cruise in the romantic “City of Light” and discover a new country: Switzerland. Marvel at the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe in Paris, sample fresh croissants at your leisure and enjoy an evening tour in Montmartre, the premier artists’ enclave, during your time in France. Plus, indulge in Swiss chocolates in your spare time when you're not allowing our knowledgeable guides to lead you through Geneva, the “Peace Capital,” and spectacular Chillon Castle on the shores of Lake Geneva. With world-class hotels, daily breakfast, excursions and transfers between your hotel and river cruise ship all included, our optional land packages are nearly impossible to pass up. And through June 30, 2024, you can reserve one of these packages without adding to your overall investment as part of our Complimentary Land Package offer!
