Hosted by Mike & Marti Andrews, Owners
Coyote Canyon Winery, Prosser, WA

Mike Andrews, a managing partner and vineyard manager of Andrews Vineyards/Coyote Canyon Vineyard, is also owner of Coyote Canyon Winery with his wife Martha. Mike started out as a cattle rancher and diversified row crop farmer, but began the transition into wine grapes in 1994 with 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Coyote Canyon Winery was started to showcase the quality of Coyote Canyon Vineyard’s grapes and today he and his son, Jeff, farm 1300 acres of contiguous vineyard in the Horse Heaven hills, growing 26 varieties. They are also a major supplier of wine grapes to Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Coyote Canyon Winery and 16 smaller wineries around the northwest and have received more than 200 gold medals since its’ founding. “We love recognition but our passion is about our wines, our family, and our history. It would be a pleasure to share these passions with you.”

Q&A With Mike & Marti Andrews

Why do you believe you are the right wine host for this cruise?

I love people & I love the art of winemaking. My wife is an artist. Fine art and the art of winemaking are the perfect pair.

Tell us about yourself and your passion for wine!

I truly have a passion for growing grapes and making wine. Sharing those wines and our story with our customers is what I love best about this business. I planted my first grapes in 1994 – a 20-acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon. That crop was part of Columbia Crest’s new Grand Estates label which earned a 90 in Wine Spectator. From that time on, I began planting more grapes, mostly for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. Then after multiple mentions in Wine Spectator of wines produced from our grapes, we made our first barrel of wine for fun in the fall of 2002 from Syrah. We already knew we had a great location, and we believed we could produce world class wines. Since that time, Coyote Canyon Winery has won over 200 gold medals and continues to produce high quality wines.

How do you stand out from our other incredible wine hosts?

That would be because of my enthusiasm about the trip!

How did you first fall in love with wine?

The “Aha Moment” for me was in the barrel room at a small restaurant that served flights of wine. I immediately fell in love with Primitivo. I went home and ordered 5 acres worth of plants to plant that spring. It has been one of our best sellers and won many awards. Marti’s moment was when a professional chef paired our award winning Primitivo with a spicy Duck Street Tacos. She said it was a flavor explosion.

What are you most looking forward to on your river cruise?

Sharing my wines while also teaching about wines from other areas. Marti is looking forward to not only seeing the beautiful countryside and the different grape growing methods but also hopes to see the art of these countries.

What is something fun/unique you wish to share?

I met my wife, Marti, when she was displaying her art work at a wine and gift shop. I was going there to ship 10 cases of wine to Texas for a wedding. We almost ran in to each other in the parking lot. We got out and started talking and ended up on a date to the rodeo.

What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to?

I went to France with my son and several other growers to see where the Pellenc harvesters were built. While touring, we visited the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine growing area. We have a site in our vineyard where we grow mostly Rhone varietals that many experts think is very similar the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine growing region.

If you were stranded along on a desert island and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?

I would select our Albariño, because I love the crisp refreshing lemon & lime notes. Marti would select our El Chrispear Albaiño (champagne) on ice.

Expertly Curated WINE EXPERIENCES

Immerse yourself in the many flavors of Europe on one of AmaWaterways unique Wine Cruises, which let you add a unique, epicurean dimension to one of our European itineraries. Like our standard river cruises, guests have the opportunity to join tours that highlight the famous sights in each port of call. These special itineraries, however, offer guests a perfect blend of wine-related experiences and excursions in grand capitals and charming towns. You’ll taste local cuisine, discover how wine is made and, of course, partake in tastings — all at no additional cost. Whether you have a seasoned appreciation for fine wine, or simply indulge in a sip here and there, this is a wonderful way to uncork the traditions of the local culture and learn about the region you’re visiting.

About the Wine Region – The Rhine

The Rhine along with its main tributaries—the Moselle and Main—have created a wine connoisseur’s paradise, which can be discovered on our Europe’s Rivers & Castles, Enchanting Rhine, Captivating Rhine and Rhine & Moselle Splendors itineraries.

The Upper Middle Rhine’s slate soil combined with a semi-continental climate have proven to be a recipe for wine-growing success for the Rheingau vineyards, yielding high-quality white wine varieties, and some fine reds.
